Our Industry - The New International Environment
Peter Barton Hutt is a senior counsel in the Washington, DC law firm of Covington & Burling, specializing in Food and Drug Law. He began his law practice with the firm in 1960 and, except for his four years in the government, has continued at the firm ever since. From 1971 to 1975 he was Chief Counsel for the Food and Drug Administration.
Since 1994, he has taught a full course on Food and Drug Law during Winter Term at Harvard Law School. He is the co-author of Food and Drug Law: Cases and Materials (Foundation Press, 1st edition 1980, 2d edition 1991, 3d edition 2007) and has published more than 175 book chapters and articles on food and drug law and on health policy. He has represented the national trade associations for the food, prescription drug, nonprescription drug, dietary supplement, and cosmetic industries. While at FDA he drafted the legislation that became the Medical Device Amendments of 1976, and beginning in 1962 he has participated in the drafting of most of the major legislation amending the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. He has testified before the House and Senate more than 100 times either as counsel accompanying a witness or as a witness.
He was named by The Washingtonian magazine as one of Washington's 50 best lawyers (out of more than 40,000) and as one of Washington's 100 most influential people; by the National Law Journal as one the 40 best health care lawyers in the United States; and by Global Counsel as the best FDA regulatory specialist in Washington, DC. Business Week referred to Mr. Hutt in June 2003 as the "unofficial dean of Washington food and drug lawyers." In naming Mr. Hutt in September 2005 as one of the eleven best food and drug lawyers, the Legal Times also referred to him as "the dean of the food-and-drug bar." In April 2005, Mr. Hutt was presented the Distinguished Alumni Award by FDA. In May 2005, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for research advocacy by the Foundation for Biomedical Research.

Ray Cao is the CEO and Co-Founder of Loose Button, a company that connects high-end cosmetics brands with consumers across North America, through their subscription sampling program. Started in early 2011, Loose Button was the first with this model in Canada, and has quickly grown to become one of largest and most dominant subscription sampling companies since, working closely with numerous publishers, luxury cosmetics and fragrance brands.
Every season, Loose Button members receive a Luxe Box filled with 7 to 8 beauty and lifestyle products for them to try and ultimately purchase. Prestige brands work with Loose Button to effectively target and track the return on investment of their product samples. Prior to Loose Button, Ray was a founding employee at Polar Mobile, a digital media platform provider that builds apps for some of the biggest media companies in the world.
When he is not working on Loose Button, Ray serves on the Board of Directors of the Impact Entrepreneurship Group, Canada’s largest youth run entrepreneurship organization. He also is an adviser to VeloCity, a leading technology incubator in Waterloo, an advisory board member of New York’s Entrepreneur Week, and a member of the DiverseCity Steering Committee, which consists of prominent individuals in the Greater Toronto Area who recognize the value and potential of diversity in leadership for the region’s social and economic prosperity.
Ray is a past recipient of Waterloo’s Top 40 Under 40 award, Profit Magazine’s Future Entrepreneurial Leaders Top 20 Under 30 award, and is a nominee for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2012.

Get the inside story from Mario Pilozzi, former CEO of one of the country’s highest profile companies, Wal-Mart Canada. This is the company that is known for its meteoric growth, its legendary efficient distribution and its powerful customer attraction. Now serving a million customers a day with eighty-four thousand associates, Wal-Mart’s arrival in Canada has been a game-changer: affecting retailers, consumers, manufacturers, supply-chains and service providers. Mario will share some of his experiences as CEO during this period and is looking forward to lots of questions from the audience.

Dr. Lista is on active staff at Trillium Health Centre (The Mississauga Hospital) and was Chief of Plastic Surgery for over 10 years. He is a founder and Past President of the Ontario Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Lista is a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is the Past President of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery.
As a highly accomplished Toronto plastic surgeon, Dr. Lista has innovated many new surgical procedures. He is recognized as an authority in aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgery and has given numerous papers and presentations at national and international meetings around the world.
Dr. Lista frequently hosts visiting surgeons who come from around the world to view him performing surgery at The Plastic Surgery Clinic. Fashion Magazine recently named Dr. Lista as one of Toronto's top cosmetic surgeons.
Calvin McDonald,

Calvin McDonald was appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sears Canada in June 2011. Prior to this appointment, Mr. McDonald held various positions with Loblaw Companies Limited, with his most recent title being Executive Vice President, Conventional Division, with responsibility for over $10 billion revenue, over 400 stores and over 50,000 associates.
Mr. McDonald began working in retail more than 18 years ago. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1994. Mr. McDonald also earned an MBA at the University of Toronto in 2000. Mr. McDonald has progressed through a variety of positions with increasing responsibility at Loblaw Companies: Vice President On-line Services, Vice President Merchandising & Marketing—No Frills Division, Senior Vice President, Grocery Business Unit, and Executive Vice President, Marketing, CRM—Brands & Corporate Strategy. Mr. McDonald is married with four children and lives in Toronto.
