Using Your Scent

Follow the Directions

Scented products, whether they are cosmetics, perfumes or household cleaners should be used as per the manufacturers directions. Read package directions carefully before using a product and follow them exactly. When the manufacturer’s directions recommend a patch test, do not skip this step even though you have used the product safely before. Your allergic response can change and you need to be sure that you won’t react each time you use the product.

Severe problems can result from using a product for a purpose other then its intended use. Scented products and cosmetics applied to the skin are designed for use on healthy skin. Never apply these products when skin is broken or unhealthy.

If you have a reaction to a product, contact a physician or allergist for a professional examination. If you suspect a particular product, it may help to obtain a list of ingredients. Presently, manufacturers can be contacted for ingredient information for personal care products.

It is required in the Canadian Cosmetic Regulations that the manufacturer’s name and address appear on product labels. Often a 1-800 number is also present. The Regulations also require manufacturers to list ingredients on product labels. Cosmetic manufacturers can be a good source of information and may assist in answering any questions or concerns that you may have.
